South Carolina Proposes Compounding and Collaborative-Practice Rules
South Carolina’s Board of Pharmacy published proposed compounding and collaborative-practice rules October 23. The package addresses sterile and hazardous-drug preparation and changes facility-permit training language. Comments are due November 23 at 5 p.m. A December 11 hearing depends on a timely qualifying request. These proposals are not effective. Pharmacy leaders should review current procedures and agreements before preparing their comments.
Document 5488 covers compounding, sterile and hazardous preparation, and collaboration. It remains proposed. Implementation requires legislative approval and publication; the December 11 hearing depends on a timely qualifying request.1
Prepare a focused operational review
Chad’s analysis: Assign one owner to compare the proposal with existing preparation procedures, training records, and collaboration agreements. Separate provisions that call for operational planning from questions that need clarification in comments. Keep current controls in place while review continues. Prepare a list of affected documents and responsible staff so any later implementation can follow the final text and confirmed dates.
